What we do

Hands-on senior support to join up the early years system.

We help systems turn ambition into practice

We help local authorities, NHS and the Voluntary Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector to co-create and strengthen early years systems. We work in partnership, combining evidence, creativity, and authentic collaboration to reduce inequalities and deliver lasting impact for babies and young children.

“We hold a deep respect for lived experience, recognising that the best solutions are built from within communities.”

How we help

Four areas where we work alongside your system.

01

Strengthening the System

Insight, challenge and strategic expertise to strengthen the Early Years system, improve outcomes and reduce inequalities.

  • Reviewing and strengthening Best Start in Life plans and strategies, turning ambition into clear priorities, action and measurable outcomes.
  • Building shared ownership and accountability for the Best Start in Life vision and outcomes across the system.
  • Strengthening leadership, governance and collaboration to join up services and address fragmentation.
  • Developing and embedding Test, Learn and Grow approaches to enable local systems to innovate, learn and improve.
  • Connecting Best Start in Life, Healthy Child and other key pathways to create a more joined-up whole-system approach.
02

Families at the heart of change

Building the confidence, capability and conditions for meaningful coproduction with parents, carers and communities.

  • Embedding coproduction in Early Years governance and decision-making so families have a meaningful influence on priorities, services and change.
  • Building shared understanding and capability in codesign and coproduction across the local system.
  • Strengthening approaches to parent and carer engagement, getting the fundamentals right and understanding when different approaches are needed.
  • Moving beyond consultation and panels towards sustained, meaningful participation that influences practice, services and outcomes.
  • Creating the conditions for coproduction to become everyday practice, rather than a standalone activity.
03

Listening to babies and young children

Building workforce confidence and skills to listen to babies and young children to improve their experiences, services and places.

  • Listening to babies and young children using the learning from the Mosaic approach to strengthen practice, improve their experiences and inform decision-making.
  • Building workforce confidence in creative practice that enables young children to express themselves and participate.
  • Expanding access to the Arts and cultural opportunities to support participation, wellbeing and reduce inequalities.
  • Planning for Play collaborations to increase children's access to play and green spaces and improve young children's health and wellbeing.
04

Understand. Act. Learn. Improve

Using Childhood is Now's tried and tested systematic approach to reviewing, developing and measuring outcomes.

  • Bringing together evidence, local data and lived and learnt experience to understand what matters most and will make the greatest difference for babies, young children and families.
  • Using evidence and insights to understand local need and inequalities and develop clear priorities for action.
  • Measuring what works to achieve the best outcomes for children and reflect on what is changing and why, for whom and where further action is needed.
  • Using learning to drive positive change and strengthen approaches that improve outcomes and reduce inequalities.
